The Rev. Albert D. Tyson III served as the Presiding Elder of the North District of the Chicago Annual Conference in the 4th Episcopal District.
In the past, he was Assistant Minister in Mount Pisgah, Jersey City, New Jersey; Assistant Minister in Ebenezer, Evanston, Illinois; Pastor of Saint James, Elgin, Illinois; Pastor of Bethel, Richmond, Indiana, and Pastor of St. Stephen, Chicago, Illinois.
He was elected in 2018 as the President of the Connectional Presiding Elders’ Council of the AME Church. He also represented the AME Church in a variety of ecumenical capacities including the Pan-Methodist Commission and the World Methodist Council. He served as Senior Columnist for The Christian Reorder.
At the time of his death, Rev. Tyson was as a member of the Public Building Commission of Chicago. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the City Colleges of Chicago from 2000 until 2011. In addition to his volunteer service for the PBC Board, Rev. Tyson was a member of the Community Advisory Council of the Urban Health Program of the University of Illinois at Chicago; Chicago Branch Treasurer for the Congress of National Black Churches; Chairman of the Seventh Congressional District Clergy; Chicago Branch Chairman of the Minister’s Division of the Rainbow/P.U.S.H. Coalition; and a member of the Operation P.U.S.H. Board of Directors. He has also been a board member of the Community Task Force at Malcolm X College, the Westside Health Authority, Henry Homer Boys & Girls Club, Bobby E. Wright Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center, The Women’s Treatment Center, Chicago Theological Seminary, Interfaith Organizing Project, and the Near Westside Community Development Corporation.
He was a Lifetime Member of the NAACP and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Reverend Tyson received his bachelor’s degree from Newark State College in Union, New Jersey, and his master’s degree from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. He also received an honorary doctorate from Monrovia College in Liberia.
Rev. Tyson died on June 21, 2019, in Chicago, Illinois at age 70. He is survived by his wife, Robin, his two children, Albert IV, and Annjeanette and 2 grandchildren.
