The Importance of Higher Education

By Sister Lynette Lewis, Greater Mt. Nebo AME Church DOLA

Greater Mt. Nebo AME Church in Bowie, Maryland, was able to bless four of its high school graduating youth with over $16,000 in scholarship funds. The scholarships began after the Rev. Dr. Jonathan L. Weaver was appointed as the pastor of Greater Mt. Nebo in 1988. Each year, Greater Mt. Nebo presents its graduating seniors with funds to give them a kick start with their first year of college. Over the last 20 years, Greater Mt. Nebo has been able to award over $500,000 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors.

Every second Sunday, a special collection is taken that goes towards the scholarship fund.  Also, every year Greater Mt. Nebo sponsors a Greek Sunday, where the Divine 9 Greek organizations are invited to worship with us. The attending Greek participants’ donations go towards the scholarship fund.

Matthew 6:33 says, “But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” As important as education is, it should never come before a relationship with God. It’s okay to get overwhelmed but always take time to talk to God.

Greater Mt. Nebo realizes the importance of higher education. There are many different understandings of what education is but one thing that we all can agree upon is the importance of education. Education provides stability in life, increasing the chances for better opportunities.

Education provides financial security as it tends to lead to a higher-paying job. For the world to become equal, we know that it needs to start with education.

Education provides confidence to express opinions. It is something that’s not only needed on a personal level but also on a global level, as it’s something that keeps our world safe and makes it a more peaceful place.

Education teaches people the difference between right and wrong. Proverbs 16:16 says, “How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.” Nice and expensive items can be enjoyable but there are very few things in life that can never be taken away, go out of style, and create better people. Education is one of those things.
