The 7th Annual BACLO Convention, held at Gow Chapel AME Church in Kraaifontein, concluded with remarkable success over the weekend of June 7-9, 2024, under the capable leadership of Brother Henry van Rhyn. The event, which saw a significant increase in attendance with 224 delegates, including clergy and laity, for inspiring and empowering sessions, marked a new milestone in our journey. The growth in numbers for a record third successive year is a testament to our collective efforts and commitment. Delegates from all Presiding Elder districts attended: Beaufort West, Charlotte Maxeke, Montagu, Paarl, and Worcester.
The theme for this year’s convention, “Empowered Unity: Laypersons United in Service and Faith,” not only set an inspiring tone for the weekend but also served as a powerful reminder of our shared mission and values. Delegates were privileged to hear from the outgoing Conference Director of Lay Activities, Brother James Ellis, who delivered an insightful teaching on “Growing a Healthy Lay Organization.” His wisdom and guidance provided valuable direction for all attendees. Additionally, the delegates were honored by the presence of the 15th Episcopal Bishop, Rt. Rev. Sylvester Scott Beaman. Following Brother Ellis’s presentation, Bishop Beaman shared his thoughts and hosted a Q&A session, enriching the experience with his profound insights.
A touching memorial service was held to honor members who have passed. Comforting words were delivered by the Rev. Raynol Matthys, the hosting Presiding Elder of the Paarl District. The service was a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of those who have dedicated their lives to service and faith.
Reports from all Presiding Elder district lay organizations highlighted the past year’s work, presenting a unified challenge to elevate the lay organization to new heights. These reports showcased the dedication and commitment of laypersons across the various districts.
The highlight of the weekend was the Gala Event on Saturday evening, where laity members were celebrated and honored with awards for their exceptional service in God’s vineyard. The guest speaker, Dr. Allan Boesak, a prominent South African Dutch Reformed Church cleric, politician, anti-apartheid activist, and former President of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, delivered an inspiring call to action. He emphasized that if we, as the church, do no stand for something, we will fall for anything.
The convention concluded with installing new executive board members who will serve for the next two years. The closing worship service, led by Rt. Rev. Sylvester Scott Beaman, Prelate of the 15th Episcopal District, sent delegates forth with an inspiring sermon and the hymn “Love Lifted Me.” His message urged everyone to continue their journey of unity in action.
Overall, the 7th Annual BACLO Convention was a resounding success, marked by powerful sessions, inspiring sermons, and a renewed commitment to service and faith within the lay community. As delegates return to their respective districts, the spirit of “Empowered Unity” will undoubtedly continue to guide their efforts and elevate the lay organization to new heights.
We look forward to witnessing the growth and impact of the BACLO community, united in service and faith, in the coming year.
