Brown Chapel, Joliet, Sponsors Black College Fair
On November 11, the Joliet Chapter of National Hook-up of Black Women, Inc. participated in the 25thBetty A. Mahone Joliet Area Black College Fair at Brown Chapel AME Church where the Rev. Darius Thomas Curtis is the pastor. Mrs. Mahone, a former first lady of Brown Chapel, started the fair when she attended a college fair with her son and no HBCUs were represented.
While maintaining its focus on HBCUs, the fair has grown to include local institutions of higher education as well as community outreach organizations and health screenings. Over 300 people from the Greater Joliet community were in attendance. Brown Chapel awarded 10 $500 scholarships. Joliet Mayor Bob Odekirk and Illinois State Senator Pat McGuire awarded proclamations to Sister Betty A. Mahone.
