In late June, the island of Barbados received a group of visitors celebrating a special type of homecoming. The Lowcountry Voices Choir participated in a series of choral performances, “Celebrating the Cultural Ties that Connect Charleston, South Carolina and Barbados.” These concerts are part of an ongoing engagement between the government of Barbados and Charleston, South Carolina, to revive and amplify ties that have existed since the colonial era.
Two churches were selected for concerts: James Street Methodist Church (June 12) and Sealy Memorial African Methodist Church (June 14). In addition to the concerts, the group participated in cultural activities on the island, such as the renowned Oistins Fish Fry.
We especially recognize the assistance of the Rev. Deborah Grant, pastor of the Hoggard Memorial AME Zion Church in Barbados, and Mrs. Rhoda Green, Honorary Consul of Barbados in Charleston.
