National Impaired Driving Prevention Month

Rev. Dr. Ann Marie Bentsi-Addison

Beloved Community, as we enter the Advent season—a time of hope, peace, joy, and love—we are also reminded of our responsibility to care for one another in practical ways. December is recognized as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or even fatigue.

Every year, thousands of lives are lost or forever changed because of impaired driving. The holiday season, with its gatherings and celebrations, can unfortunately bring increased risk. As people of faith, we are called to be mindful of how our choices affect not only ourselves but also our neighbors. Scripture reminds us, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4).

What We Can Do as a Community of Faith:
Encourage one another to plan ahead: designate a sober driver or use safe transportation.
Speak up with love when we see someone about to drive while impaired.
Support families who have been impacted by impaired driving through prayer and tangible care.
Teach our youth the importance of responsibility, self-control, and valuing life.

This month, let us remember that choosing safety is an act of discipleship and love. Our mission as the church is not only to save souls but to preserve lives. May we be a light in our communities, promoting wisdom, health, and safety during this sacred season.
“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty” (Proverbs 22:3).

Let us honor God by making wise choices and encouraging others to do the same. Together, we can prevent tragedy and spread the message that life is God’s gift—and it is worth protecting.
