Building Hope, One Brick at a Time: Mason Memorial Church Expands Its Legacy

By: Jefyne Togba, 14th Episcopal District TCR Field Representative

Something exciting is happening at Mason Memorial Church in Monrovia, Liberia (14th Episcopal District) and it’s more than just a construction site. It’s the beginning of something bigger: a new chapter in the church’s mission to educate, uplift, and empower the next generation of Liberians.

Last year, Mason Memorial AME Church officially broke ground on an annex to Mason Memorial High School, the largest high school in the Old Rd Community where the church is located. This school serves over 200 students. In a country where a quality education is too often out of reach, the Mason Memorial High School has consistently ensured that the students receive the best education possible despite all of the challenges.

With limited high school options in the area, the need for expansion was clear. Classrooms were becoming overcrowded, and students were resorting to holding classes in the churchyard. The new annex will provide much-needed classroom space, allowing the school to welcome even more students and continue providing the quality education it’s known for.

What makes this project even more special is how it began. In September of last year, the church launched a Kickstarter-style fundraiser with one goal in mind: grow the school. And grow it did with the help of over $10,000 raised to jumpstart construction. But the real heart of this story? The students themselves contributed. The students pooled their own resources, proving that this school isn’t just a place they attend. It’s a place they believe in.

Construction officially commenced March 2025 and as construction continues, we’re reminded that this isn’t just about adding walls and windows. It’s about building legacy, one brick at a time. This project is proudly being led by Rev. Roseline S. Barnes, Pastor-in-Charge at the Mason Memorial AME Church who is committed to ensuring that the students will have a new building to start the 2025/2026 school year.
