Greetings AME Church Global Family,
Many of us are again in the aftermath of another hurricane; this one was named Beryl, or depending on where you live, another “storm of the century” might be on a path to you. What are you thinking? Maybe this is just God’s plan and way of working. I can’t do anything about it. It’s not my responsibility.
May we call for additional consideration and action through the Environmental Justice (EJ) Ministry, which is part of the AME Church’s Christian Education Department?
Our Calling
The African Methodist Episcopal Church stands with other leaders of faith who call for urgent action on climate change for the world’s poor and God’s creation. Climate change exacerbates injustice, with the most vulnerable among us impacted first and worst, which fuels greater racial, economic, gender, food, and environmental inequalities. AMEs are called to work toward climate justice as we walk and act based on our faith. Jesus commands us to love one another (John 13:34), and God has given us the responsibility to care for His good creation (Genesis 1:28, 2:15; James 2:17-23).
The burning of fossil fuels pollutes our air and waters, warms the planet, and throws our seasons out of balance—with low-income and rural communities, communities of color, children, the elderly, and our faithful in the Caribbean and Africa bearing the greatest burden (AME Church Christian Education Department.com).
Our Values
- Environmental Justice includes climate justice, food justice, housing inequalities, junkyard contamination, transportation inequities, and other inequities in marginalized communities.
- Environmental Justice is a moral and social issue.
- Environmental Justice solutions help everyone.
Your Action:
AMEC Family, help us to make the Facebook group a learning experience by posting your EJ insights, experiences, and involvements to educate, motivate, and inspire all of us to recommit ourselves to care for God’s creation by fighting all forms of Environmental Injustices! If you want to engage with other AMEs actively, join the AME Church Environmental Justice Facebook Group! Follow and share the AME Church Environmental Facebook page for information or updates about AME EJ activities or events. Feel free to contact us at climatejustice@ameced.com.
