Shorter College Accreditation Reaffirmation Effort a Success

On Tuesday, October 24, it was announced that Shorter College has received reaffirmation of its accreditation for a term of 10 years by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS). The successful accreditation reaffirmation was announced at the TRACS Fall Commission Meeting held in Orlando, Florida.

Shorter College Board Chairman Bishop Michael Mitchell; Vice Chairman of the Board, the Rev. Tyrone Broomfield; and board members the Rev. Lanell Ross, Dr. Levenis Penix, and Dr. Carolyn Jones all traveled to Florida for the meeting. Shorter College President O. Jerome Green, CFO George Mackey, Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Jean Manning, and Executive Director of Institutional Effectiveness & Assessment Dr. Keiona Middleton also made the trip.

Shorter College was previously awarded accreditation as a Category I Institution approved to offer certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees by TRACS in October 2013, for an initial term of five years. Representatives from TRACS visited Shorter College this past July for the purpose of evaluating the college for reaffirmation status.

“We are proud and honored that those who served on the TRACS evaluating team in July recognized Shorter’s commitment to academic excellence and our distinction in education, which allows our students to achieve their greatest individual potential through a quality educational and spiritual experience,” said Shorter College President O. Jerome Green. “The Board of Trustees of Shorter College are proud of President Green, the faculty, staff, and students with this recent announcement,” added Board Chairman Michael Mitchell. He added, “We are well aware of the high standards of the TRACS Accrediting Agency and thus, we are very proud of our institution for the exceptional experience offered to the students. Our 10-year reaffirmation is a distinct achievement for this great historical institution.”

TRACS was founded in 1979 as a voluntary, non-profit, self-governing organization to promote the welfare, interests, and development of postsecondary institutions, whose mission is characterized by a distinctly Christian purpose. TRACS is recognized by both the United States Department of Education (USDOE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as a national institutional accrediting agency for Christian postsecondary institutions, colleges, universities, and seminaries.

Shorter College is a private, faith-based two-year liberal arts college located in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Founded in 1886 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Shorter College is one of the nation’s 110 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and the only private, two-year HBCU in the nation.
