The World Methodist Council Steering Committee recently convened in Accra, Ghana, bringing together global leaders of the Methodist family to advance the work of the Council during the current Quinquennium.
Featured in the photo are three dedicated leaders: Bishop David R. Daniels, Jr., Chair of the Development Committee for the WMC (left); the Rev. Myron D. Howie, Treasurer of the WMC (right); and at the center, Episcopal Supervisor Daniels, whose presence symbolizes the strength of family and partnership within this international community.
The Steering Committee meets annually and plays a vital role in the life of the Council. It is composed of the Officers, Standing Committee Chairs, Regional Presidents, and three Affiliate (non-voting) members. Together, this leadership body provides oversight and direction for the Council’s mission and ministries.
Through the diligent work of the Officers and Standing Committee members, the Steering Committee ensures the progress of the Council’s initiatives and prepares for the World Methodist Council Conference, a global gathering held every five years in different parts of the world. Each year, Chairs of committees present reports highlighting accomplishments, identifying challenges, and charting paths forward for growth and impact.
Meeting in Ghana underscored the global nature of the Methodist movement, rooted in faith, service, and unity across nations and cultures. The commitment of leaders like Bishop Daniels, Rev. Howie, and their colleagues reflects the Council’s enduring vision: to strengthen the worldwide Methodist family as it engages the world with compassion and hope.
The World Methodist Council is made up of 80 Methodist, Wesleyan and related Uniting and United Churches representing over 80 million members in 138 countries. It engages, empowers and serves the member Churches by encouraging Methodist unity in witness, facilitating mission in the world, and fostering ecumenical and inter-religious activities. It promotes obedience to the Great Commandment of Jesus Christ to love God and neighbor and to fulfill the Great Commission to make disciples through vibrant evangelism, a prophetic voice, cooperative programs, faithful worship, and mutual learning.
