AME Pastor Engages in Pan-African Advocacy

Rev. Dr. Jonathan Weaver, Pastor of Greater Mt. Nebo AME Church in Bowie, MD and newly appointed member of the Mercy Ships Board of Directors, recently travelled to Conakry, Guinea, May 21-26, to attend the annual meeting of Mercy Ships onboard its floating hospital, the Africa Mercy. The forty year old organization has as its vision to follow the 2,000 year old model of Jesus Christ, bringing hope and compassion to some of the world’s poorest citizens. While in Guinea, Rev. Weaver also met privately with Professor Alpha Conde, the nation’s President, to address the 400 Year Commemoration of Africans coming to America and the need to build stronger relationships between people within the African Diaspora.

Since 1979, Mercy Ships has performed surgical procedures on its ship to over 100,000 persons from countries along the coasts of West and East Africa. The ship will soon spend ten months treating persons in Senegal, followed by similar periods in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Ms. Rosa Whittaker, President of Mercy Ships, will be a featured speaker at the Women’s Missionary Quadrennial Conference in Columbus, Ohio.
