The Kenneth E. Marcus Chapel Naming Ceremony

The Kenneth E. Marcus Chapel Naming Ceremony

The Kenneth E. Marcus Chapel Naming Ceremony

By Dr. PAM Deveaux, Retired Supervisor

It was Sunday, May 6, 2018, a warm day in Georgia. We sat among more than 1,000 people who had come to honor the memory of our beloved pastor, the Rev. Dr. Kenneth E. Marcus.

We—my daughter Dana, granddaughter Alexis, and myself—represented three generations impacted by Pastor Marcus. This spiritual giant, who during his over 30 years as a pastor, had touched hearts, changed lives, and resuscitated weary souls.

Under the leadership of Bishop Reginald T Jackson, presiding prelate of the Sixth Episcopal District and in concert with the officers of Turner Chapel AME Church, a decision was reached to name the chapel within the church, The Kenneth E. Marcus Chapel. It is a beautiful edifice that was designed with windows that bathe the chapel interior with nature’s natural light. It is truly an architectural wonder. During the program prior to the official naming ceremony, speakers included members from the congregation, Presiding Elder Larry Hudson, Bishop William DeVeaux, and the Rev. Cassandra Y. Marcus, who lifted up their memories of the man who built a Cathedral named Turner. The congregation was inspired by the encouraging homily delivered by Bishop Jackson.

As we sat and pondered the life of the Rev. Marcus, we longed to hear his explosive exuberant laugh, experience the warmth of his radiant and engaging smile, and witness his joyful vibrancy as he strummed his guitar but that was not to be. However, we rejoiced because the Rev. Marcus had come our way and we are the better for his presence in our lives.

His legacy will live through the many uttered and answered prayers. His legacy lives on in words of the many sons and daughters he mentored. The youth followed him, the seniors respected him, and the church loved him. On this day, we celebrated the life of one of God’s appointed and anointed angels.
