Report from the 2nd Brazil District Conference (September 22-25, 2018)

By Presiding Elder Mirian Moraes Mudesto, 16th Episcopal District

The second District Conference in Brazil was marked with intense discipleship by Bishop of the 16th District, Elizabeth Anne Henning Byfield, assisted by the General Officer Mr. John Thomas III and the Rev. William Miller of the 7th Episcopal District.

With great joy, the delegation was received at the new address of the Church in Brazil. This new space and 2,850 square meters, enough space to implement projects for children, adolescents, youth, adults, and seniors. The Pre-Vestibular Projects, Judo classes, Fork Lift training, Music and Dance workshops are already happening.  We will also be initiating psychotherapy classes by the end of this year.  Bishop Byfield congratulated Presiding Elder Paulo Mudesto Filho for his expressive work in Brazil, which, although in need of a major reform in the building, is moving forward.  We have established works in a donated property in Queluz in the city of São Paulo, and a mission work carried out by the Rev. Carlos Alberto da Silva in the city of Juazeiro in the state of Bahia, replacing Pastor Luiz Frederico, who went to Portugal.

One of the actions of Bishop Byfield in Brazil, due to the illness of Presiding Elder Mudesto was to name the Reverend Mirian Moraes Mudesto to act as Co-Presiding Elder during his treatment period. There was an agreement between them and all the District ministers. The bishop requested that the pastors pray for the healing of Presiding Elder Paulo Mudesto for Rev. Mirian Mudesto. This moment of faith was electric where the strong presence of God involved all.

The bishop’s sessions with pastors were extremely important for the exercise of pastoral ministry in Brazil. The BIshop explained the AME Doctrine and distributed material. She also spoke about gifts and ministries to be explored by pastors, and that for AME it is essential that “A pastor actually pastor a church.”

Bishop Byfield was presented with 3 candidates at this process to begin the ordination process in the AME Church.  She was assisted by the Rev. William Miller in the first evaluation of the candidates, who will continue on the Dominican Republic Annual Conference.

The Lay Organization reported on the activities carried out during one year. Leaders asked for translated documents for a better understanding of Church documents.

In the service on Saturday night, where Rev. Miller ministered the Word impacting everyone with his preaching, with great enthusiasm.

On the second day of the Conference, the delegation went to visit the Evangelical Church School of Prophets, which maintains a partnership with the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Brazil. Its main project is to take care of approximately 100 children, with courses of digital inclusion, cooking, musical instruments, sports and leisure among other actions, with its leader; Pastor Sueli and 6 adults. Bishop Byfield interacted with the children, who have gathered to receive her, along with General Officer Mr. John Thomas and Rev. William Miller.

Before the moment of celebration on Sunday night, the pastors prayed for Bishop Byfield, in a moment of great emotion, to intercede for her life, family, and ministry.

The celebration was marked by many praises and gratitude to God for the Conference. Bishop Byfield was honored with the presentation of street dancing, conducted by a young man baptized by her at the 2017 Conference.  Bishop Byfield also presented a suitcase with donations for the children of Bahia.

The Church in Rio de Janeiro, in its recovery work for drug addicts, has partnered with a Recovery Center, where it sends those who need this type of service. Bishop Byfield visited this Institution on September 24th with the type of work performed on site. Realizing the needs of the couple who run the Recovery Center, and their daughters; the bishop made a special listening and prayer service. Then with Presiding Elders Paulo Mudesto and Mirian Mudesto, Rev. João Mário, Sister Rosistela and Brother Wander, consecrated with prayer and anointing of the temple, inside and out, declaring the powerful action of God, which is “… He who is mighty to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” Eph. 3.20

The 2018 Conference concluded with a positive evaluation, and with gratitude.  During these days there were special moments of brokenness, clarity, forgiveness, and celebration, marking a new era of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Brazil.

Ef. 3.20
