Position Description

 

Camp Director

 

Camp Baber is a 57-acre Christian Camp and Retreat Center located in Cassopolis, Michigan. The Camp Director will provide administrative, supervisory, and programmatic oversight to all aspects of the camp.

Reports To: The Camp Baber Board of Trustees

 

PURPOSE

The Camp Baber Director must possess a genuine passion and vision for developing year-round camp programming that supports the policies of our faith-based organization. The Director will seek resources, create, and implement strategies for onsite programming for adults, youth, and entities, targeting:

  • a population outside of the AME Church
  • the 4th Episcopal District
  • the Connectional AME Church

The Camp Director is responsible for providing oversight of the Camp staff, facilities, programs, finances, guest groups, campers, marketing, and Human Resources. This includes primary responsibility for staff nurture and development, financial and budgeting oversight, guest group relations, legal compliance issues, overall marketing plan, and community relations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The Camp Director position requires flexibility in work schedule hours depending on the needs of onsite programs which may include evenings and weekends.

Preferred qualifications include a college degree and/or a minimum of three years of camp or management experience in a ministry, hospitality, or camp environment. The candidate will be able to multitask and must possess:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in QuickBooks, Microsoft Office.
  • Experience in team leadership and team building.
  • A general understanding of food service management, camp maintenance, and quality housekeeping which meets professional hospitality standards.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

STRATEGIC PLANNING

Become familiar with the 2016 report of Kaleidoscope Consultants with the end goal of adopting the suggested strategies. Participate in the development and implementation of a one-year and three-year strategic plan in conjunction with Camp Baber Trustees, and Camp staff which will ensure the continued and long-term success of Camp Baber.

 

BUSINESS

Provide monthly status updates and financial reports to Camp Baber Trustees.

Submit monthly payroll.

Oversee all receipts and approve disbursements.

Collaborate with the 4th District Treasurer to complete an annual review of all insurance policies.

Collaborate with the 4th District treasurer to prepare a yearly budget and monitor actual vs. budgeted revenues/expenditures; recommend adjustments as necessary

Develop a working, collaborative relationship with all committees of Camp Baber Board of Trustees.

 

PERSONNEL

Recruit, hire, train, and supervise all full-time and part-time staff and perform annual performance reviews.

Make recommendations for additions and terminations to the Camp Baber Trustees.

 

LEGAL-COMPLIANCE

Ensure that the camp complies with all local, state, and federal regulations.

Seek and follow-through on inspection orders from Health Department, Fire Marshal, and other regulatory agencies.

Follow guidelines set forth in American Camping Association and seek accreditation if approved by the camp board.

Review risk management policies with Camp Staff and enforce all required safety guidelines.

 

MARKETING

Develop a printed marketing strategy to promote seasonal and summer events.

Oversee publication of monthly email newsletter eblast to 4th District churches.

Oversee content management of the website to ensure it is current and relevant.

Promote camp at local churches, Annual Conferences, and 4th District meetings.

Work to expand participation among AME churches, local, area churches, and entities.

Seek to fill the beds and open dates through advertising, incentives, promotions, and relevant communications.

 

GUEST GROUP RELATIONS

Oversee the hosting of all guest groups and retreats.

Provide evaluation tools for all guest groups and review them promptly with all appropriate Camp Department heads and Camp Baber Trustees.

Provide contracts for all guest groups. Collect deposits, final payments, and schedule groups.

Coordinate oversight of volunteers that may assist on weekend or midweek areas with the appropriate Department heads.

Work alongside volunteers as appropriate and recognize the importance of volunteers and the opportunity to minister with and to them.

Provide oversight of serving of meals, cleaning and set-up of the dining hall, as needed.

 

PROGRAMMING

Collaborate with the Camp Baber Trustees to develop, implement, and evaluate relevant programs for our churches and guests.

Monitor financial feasibility of all programmed retreats.

Recommend creative programming opportunities to the Camp Baber Board of Trustees.

 

COMMUNITY RELATIONS

If possible, utilize vendors and services from local merchants.

Participate in community events and programs, when possible.

Attend a local church of your choice, with periodic visits to area AME Churches.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HOURS

The Camp Director position is full-time, with a work schedule that varies depending on the season of the year and timing of groups at camp. The Camp Director must be willing to live and work in a camp setting with varying weather conditions and physical requirements.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary commensurate with experience, with eligibility for benefits such as vacation days, holidays, and sick time as defined by the 4th District for full-time employees; housing on or in close proximity to campgrounds will be provided; mileage and hotel reimbursement for business-related trips.
